The Town of Westport, Connecticut has created an organization of volunteers under the Federal
Citizen Corps initiative known as the Westport Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
The mission of Westport
CERT, a division of the Police Department within the Public Safety Office, is to serve Westport, and provide a way for
members to serve their community by supporting the local emergency service agencies in disaster, crisis and emergency response,
and by promoting safety education, emergency and disaster preparedness. In all activities, the safety of CERT members is the
first priority.
Our 20+ hours Basic Training Course, regular ongoing review sessions and training exercises keeps
us capable and ready to respond. Westport CERT is open to everyone 18 years or older. Westport CERT is welcoming
Westporter’s to join their 2010 Fall basic training class. For more information send an email
to info@WestportCERT.org. In the past, BASIC
TRAINING COURSES on emergency preparedness were held during Fall 2007, Spring 2008 and Spring 2010. Among
others, the following topics were covered: First Aid, CPR, AED, Disaster Preparedness, Medical Operations, Team
Organization, Fire Safety, Search and Rescue and Disaster Scenarios. Training for the FCC Amateur Radio
(HAM) Technician License started
Thursday, April 15th 2010 has been completed. HAM radios have been used effectively during emergencies. They can be great
tools to add to our “tool-kit”. “Preparing Your Household Emergency Plan” - Are you ready? Would you like to be better prepared when the next storm, electrical outage, or other emergency strikes? A
seminar on “Preparing Your Household Emergency Plan” was held by the Westport Community Emergency Response Team
(CERT) on May 1st at the Westport Police Department Training Room. More seminars are planned. You will learn about sheltering in place, preparing to evacuate, planning for children, those
with special needs, and pets; stocking up and maintaining supplies, what to do for your home business, computer data backup,
communications with family, including your extended family, working with your neighbors, and how to maintain and review your
plan on a regular basis. If you are interested in attending,
please register by calling (203) 226-0780 or send an email to info@WestportCERT.org Westport CERT is now on Twitter. We will be posting meeting, training
and events notices, as well as preparedness information that may be of interest to the community. Follow us @WestportCERT.
